The Male And Female Gaze In Jennifer Lopez- im into you

This music video is different from the other two as the main singer is female, also I think this music video is more sophisticated than the other two which might be due to the age of Jennifer Lopez, however she still manages to pull of the whole sexy look. The male and the female gaze can be applied here and I think the male gaze is applied more which is different from my other two videos where it was more the female gaze. The music video is by a female artist and therefore this may be the reason why the male gaze is seen more as the video contains a male model who appears to be wearing less clothing then Jennifer, I think this is good as it shows how women can be classy and sexy while fully clothed and it gives the chance for the male gaze to take place as the male model will attract females attention.

The main difference in this music video to the other two is that in this music video a completely different representation of women is shown. In this music video women are shown as strong and independent as at the begging of the video it shows the male running to Jennifer which shows her power and dominance. Whereas in the other music videos women are seen as sex objects who must wear little clothing and act a certain way to gain male attention. The male gaze can be applied here because the male model used has a typically nice body with muscles, therefore this would attract the attention of females. However, males may also be interested as they may compare themselves to this type of body, there are shots were the male is seen holding Jennifer which suggests he is protecting her and males may think they have to have a body like this in order to get a women like Jennifer.

Different shots are used in this video to portray the women as being strong, like the other two videos close ups are used to show her curves and body, but she is wearing more clothing which shows class. Also many close ups are used to show her face in which she poses to attract the attention of males. Long shots and mid shots are used to show her lying down with the male which shows him holding and protecting her, again this shows class and shows how women aren’t just seen as sex objects. Other close ups are used to show the males muscles which would be for a female audience, however close ups are used of Jennifer’s hips which will appeal to males. I think this music video shows a completely different representation of women as it shows they can be dominant and strong and attractive without having to act and dress in a certain way. I think both the male and female gaze can be applied here which shows how men can be used for the pleasure of women too.

The male and female gaze for Snoop Dogg- Sweat

Male and Female Gaze In Snoop Dogg - Sweat

Throughout this music video Mulvey’s male/female gaze theory can be applied because the music video contains a range of camera shots and actors which will entice male and female viewers. Snoop Dogg released another version of this song before this one called “wet” which was dedicated to Prince William, but after receiving criticism he was forced to change the name of the song and to make it more family friendly. The original song name shows how little respect he has for women as the lyrics read “I wanna make you wet” which suggests how women are seen as sex objects have to dress and act a certain way to receive male attention.

Transitions and close ups have been used in this video to exaggerate parts of the female body which men find attractive. For example at 0.19, there is a close up shot used on the women’s body which clearly is showing her stomach and boobs, also this shot has been mirrored so there is double. This type of shot would engage a male audience as they would find this desirable to look at; especially seeing as the women is wearing little clothing being a bikini top which is exposing most of her boobs. A lot of the close ups are used to show the curves of the women’s body and to show them dancing around Snoop Dogg, this suggests that women have to act like this in order to look sexy which creates a bad representation for women as this implies nothing else matters as long as you wear revealing clothing and act in a certain way you will get males attention.

Long shots have been used to show the whole of the women’s body and her curves which is appealing to men, at 1.49 a low angle is used to show the legs and bum of one of the women and then it pans up to show the rest of her body. This is shown through the eyes of a male and suggests women must have a good body to receive attention. Also the women actor does poses which are shown through long shots which would catch male attention as these can be seen as sexual poses.

The Male And Female Gaze

The Male And Female Gaze In Eric Prydz - Call On Me

Mulvey’s male/female gaze theory is represented in the music video ‘call on me’ directed by Huse Monfaradi which received huge sales and is best known for its music video which features a group of women and a man performing aerobics in a sexual way while wearing 1980s aerobics outfits. The male gaze is represented in this video as a range of camera shots are used to focus on certain parts of the women’s body such as her bum which would attract a male audience. Due to the little clothing the women are wearing and the moves they are performing in a sexual way this supports Mulvey’s theory that women can be seen as sexual objects. We could also say the female gaze has been used in this video but not as much as the male gaze as they have included a man in the video performing aerobics with the girls, the camera shows close ups of certain parts of the males body which will attract a female audience.

A low angle shot has been used here to emphasise this part of the females body(the bum) which would attract the attention of a male. Lots of close ups are used throughout the music video which focus on different parts of the females body, for example the stomach, legs, bum and face. Many close ups are used for the face of the male and the lead women which clearly shows there facial expressions towards each other which are quite posy and sexual, also this shows the males face looking quite excited which suggests how sexy the women look. There is one shot when the camera zooms into the lead women biting her lip and this would appeal to males as they can find this sexy.

In this shot a high angle has been used which gives males a bird’s eye view of the whole of the women’s body which make it more appealing for males as she is posed in a sexual way and this may suggest that women are judged on their body and looks and are seen as sex objects. At 2.15 a high angle has been used which gives males a full look into the females cleavage which makes it more appealing for them, this suggest how women can be judged on these parts of her body.
The director of this video has made it clear that he wants this to appeal to men as he has made the women perform sexual aerobics routines whilst wearing revealing clothing which would engage a male audience. All the women in the video all have similar bodies which are slim and toned which suggest this is the ideal body that women should have in order to attract a males attention, at the end of the video the males and the lead female are seen walking towards each other which clearly shows that she has caught the males attention, this could be misleading for young girls as they may think they have to dress and act like this to get a males attention.

Conversation video

To Improve

Things i need to do to improve my video:

  • Use more close up shots
  • improve continuity by ensuring i don't use too many different shots which are irrelevant
  • hold the camera more still so the film flows better and also not use the zoom
  • make the shot types relevant to the conversation by using wider shots
Shot types i should use:
  • Wide shot
  • over the shoulder shots
  • master shots
  • close up shots
